How to Mount a TV in the Corner: A Step-by-Step Guide

Mounting a television in the corner of a room can be a space-saving and aesthetically pleasing solution. It allows you to maximize your viewing experience without compromising on design. If you're wondering how to mount a TV in the corner, follow this guide to help you get started.

Choose the Right Mount: Begin by selecting a TV mount that is specifically designed for corner installation. Look for a mount that offers swivel and tilt functionality. This will allow you to adjust the TV's angle for optimal viewing from different seating positions. You don't want to go cheap on this one. Remember, the TV is most likely going to be in a fully extended position from the wall, meaning all that weight is going to be increased on that mount and wall.

Locate Studs: Use a stud finder to locate the studs in the corner where you plan to mount the TV.

Pro tip: If you don't have a stud finder on hand, a small rare earth magnet will do just fine. Simply run that magnet along the wall until it grabs onto one of the metal screws holding the drywall onto the studs. There's the center of your stud.

Studs provide the necessary support to hold the weight of the TV and ensure its stability. Mark the center of the studs using a pencil.

Measure and Mark: Measure the height at which you want the TV to be mounted. Make sure it is at eye level when seated. Mark this height on the wall with a pencil.

Attach the Mounting Bracket: Attach the mounting bracket to the back of the TV following the manufacturer's instructions. Ensure that it is securely fastened.

Drill Pilot Holes: Using a power drill and an appropriate drill bit, drill pilot holes into the marked stud locations. These holes will serve as guides for screw placement. Use a small drill bit, you'll get a better bite on your lags when you drill those in next.

Mount the Bracket: Position the TV mounting bracket against the wall, aligning the pilot holes with the marked stud locations. Securely attach the bracket to the wall using high quality lags and a socket wrench or drill.

Install the TV: With the help of a friend or family member, carefully lift and place the TV onto the mounted bracket. Make sure it is securely attached and level. Double-check that all screws are tightened properly.

Adjust the Viewing Angle: Utilize the swivel and tilt functionality of the mount to adjust the TV's viewing angle. This will allow you to achieve the desired positioning for optimal viewing from different areas of the room.

Conceal Cables: To create a clean and organized look, consider concealing the cables. There are various options available, such as running them through wall-mounted cable channels or using cable management solutions.

Test and Enjoy: Once everything is securely in place, plug in your TV and connect any necessary devices. Turn on the TV and ensure that it is functioning properly. Sit back, relax, and enjoy your newly mounted TV in the corner of your room.

When mounting a TV in the corner, there's a couple of things you should be aware of to ensure this tv doesn't come down in the middle of the night. :)

Here's a few:

Stud Placement: Corner walls may have irregular stud placement, which can pose a challenge when mounting the TV. Use a stud finder(or a magnet) to locate the studs accurately and ensure that they are strong enough to support the weight of the TV. Sometimes the studs aren't in the best spot to achieve a dead center corner mounting solution(rarely).

Weight and Size Limitations: Check the weight and size limitations of both the TV and the mounting bracket. Make sure the bracket is compatible with your TV's weight and size to avoid any stability issues or damage. The larger the TV, the longer the arm needed to clear both walls to fit within the corner. The longer the arms on the mount, the more load on the wall. So make sure everything is dialed in. High quality lags, proper pilot holes and of course a high quality mounting bracket.

Viewing Angle: Consider the viewing angle from different seating positions in the room. A corner-mounted TV may have limitations in terms of the optimal viewing angle, especially if the room layout or furniture placement restricts certain viewing areas. Choose a mounting bracket with long swivel and tilt functionality to adjust the TV's angle accordingly. You don't want a situation where it's impossible to get behind your TV after it's mounted.

Cable Management: Corner-mounted TVs can present challenges when it comes to cable management. Ensure that you have a plan to conceal or manage the cables effectively to maintain a neat and organized appearance. Options include using cable channels, wall-mounted cable covers, or other cable management solutions. Wall mounting the devices or adding a floating shelf are good options as well.

Wall Condition: Assess the condition of the wall where you plan to mount the TV. Ensure that it is sturdy and can support the weight of the TV and the mounting bracket. If the wall is not in optimal condition, such as being uneven or weak, consider reinforcing it or consulting a professional for advice. If you drill into a stud and it feels like butter, well, that's not a good sign. Termites love wood :(

Power Outlet Accessibility: Check the location of the nearest power outlet to ensure that it is easily accessible for connecting the TV and any additional devices. If the outlet is not conveniently located, consider hiring an electrician to install a new outlet or using cable management solutions to extend the reach of the power cord.

Aesthetic Considerations: I know this is an obvious one, but consider the overall aesthetic of the room and how the corner-mounted TV will fit into the design. Ensure that the placement of the TV does not obstruct any architectural features or create an imbalance in the room's visual appeal.
